It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when the idea for Tea at Shiloh was born, but before there was the teahouse, there was Shiloh.

Throughout her life, seedlings for Shiloh were beginning to take root, but like all seeds, darkness was necessary for growth. With the passing of her father and separation from her partner, she entered a dark period of her life, and she spent many days and nights crying and shedding. Until one morning, she woke up and started calling herself Shiloh. And slowly, things started to change.

While Nicole was the name given to her by her mother, Shiloh is the name that she gave to herself, and Shiloh marked the beginning of not just the teahouse but of a new way of being.

Though there would be days where she never fully felt like either person, Shiloh continued to trust herself. Nicole was afraid all of her friends would think she was losing it, that they’d laugh at her and leave her, but Shiloh knew that this name had come to her for a reason. So even in moments of doubt, Shiloh became her mantra. A powerful reminder that she was creating a new reality for herself.

It was during this transformative year she started hanging out at teahouses and for the first time in her life she felt she could really be herself. At these teahouses, she heard conversations that uplifted her. She saw people sitting alone enjoying the company of others in silence, she saw guests reading, taking notes, writing poems. This was the type of environment she had been searching for — an accepting, nonjudgemental place, one where she could enjoy space safely.

One day she was sitting at a teahouse and around 5p the owner announced they were closing for the day and that she had to go. Not ready to go home and still wanting to feel connected, she was without a place to go. She could have stayed there through the night, reading and basking in the warm energy.

She would drive around LA for months after, looking for spaces like it, for a jazz bar that served tea, for a library that was open past 6, for a gentle space to spend the evening, but nothing. It became all that she could think about. She hoped to find a community space where others who were lost at night could find peace. And when she realized it didn’t exist, she knew she had to bring it to life.

She bought a book and dedicated every page to ideating the future space. Initially, she had wanted to call the space A Late Night Teahouse, but sitting next to a kind stranger on the plane, she began speaking to him about her idea. He asked her what the name of the space was going to be and she told him the tagline. He said that she should name it after her name ‘Shiloh’ because in Hebrew it meant a Place of Peace — & that’s when everything started coming together. The name change, the intention for the space, all her varied interests over the years. Shiloh: A Late Night Teahouse, a peaceful space to connect with yourself and others through tea and conversation. A place to listen to jazz and ambient music. A place to express yourself and be heard.

In February 2020 she made the Tea at Shiloh instagram, hopeful to find a space and bring the dream to life.

And in March 2020 the pandemic hit.

Instead of losing hope, with the help of her best friend Kai, she decided to create the teahouse prototype in her bedroom. She began sharing snippets of the space online and it slowly started to make ripples. Strangers around the world started to ask what the design style was called or comment on how her videos made them feel.

Tea at Shiloh began to grow. Although the teahouse wasn’t a physical space, it’s online iteration became a virtual space for moments of peace, calm and stillness. Shiloh began sharing her design inspiration for what the future space would one day feel like.

Once she was able to, she began hosting tea meditations on her patio and began to build her tea community in person, testing how the flow of the teahouse would one day be.

During this time, she built a community of people who shared her vision for the tea space that would become Tea at Shiloh.

She met Will, the designer of this beautiful website and the tea lover that introduced her to her favorite tea, Moonlight White.

She met her boyfriend Ahdom, who is the incredible woodworker, welder, fabricator and architect behind the teahouse.

She met Ellie, who was also searching for a late night teahouse and would later become a key member of the teahouse team and one of Shiloh’s closest friends.

Shiloh partnered with Kai, her original collaborator, and brought the teahouse to life. Kai brought his incredible design instincts, a love for creating foundation + structure and his passion for space and their friendship. Intuitively, they worked together and on 3. 3. 2022, Tea at Shiloh officially opened its doors.

We are now comprised of a magical community of hosts and guests with a love for tea, herbs, art, nature and design.

In the words of Ash, our in-house poet, being a guest of Shiloh shows you what it feels like to be taken care of, a little beacon beckoning us in, to come and share space and grow together.

Our teahouse is reimagining nightlife by creating calm, open and inspiring atmospheres for community, connection, and creation. We create spaces that feel like home, spaces that encourage guests to explore their minds and the minds of those around them. We believe that to drink tea is to connect and to heal, to dream and to understand.

We hope to see you soon.
